I originally got this from my Jiu-Jitsu instructor, saying to bring a notebook with you to write the techniques down that we go over in class... It really helped to see what we did days, weeks, and months down the road. These perishable techniques/skills are easily forgotten if you don't keep them in your mind, or practice them from time to time.
I later discovered from fire school, that there was another form of this and it had name:
After Action Review (AAR).
I remember Chief Selnoow saying take the 15 min. to write something up afterwards. You'll still have it in your mind, it will be fresh, and you'll be glad you did. Once again, its easy to forget stuff pretty quickly after you do it...
This has held true and obviously works... Its used all over the place.
I've been doing it for years... Its one of those things thats hard to make yourself do it, but you'll be glad you did.
Typically for an AAR, there are four things that everyone involved should answer:
What was planned?
What actually happened?
Why did it happen?
What can we do to improve for the next time?
This should be an open discussion, that is safe for people to say what they want. All of this is a takeaway, and you can really get some good stuff out of it.
Always try to end on a positive note.
This will come up again, as we use this method along with our videos to really amplify concepts and training.
More to come...
